What's actually slowing you down
Reaction time is just three steps: spot the thing, process it, respond. Fast only counts if you're accurate, and a handful of habits quietly tax all three. Panic-scanning is a big one. A study found that higher-ranked Valorant players kept a tighter, calmer gaze than the lower ranks, who were darting their eyes all over the screen. On LoL that mostly means the same thing: stop frantically flicking around, because eyes spread thin react slower.
Then there's decision fatigue, the reason you start auto-piloting around game three. Sixty minutes of hard thinking cuts your P300 signal, the bit of your brain that processes feedback, by 34 percent, and your game sense degrades before you consciously notice. The fix is boring and it works: a 10-minute movement break every 60 to 90 minutes.
Your phone makes all of this worse. One study of 548 students found that just having a phone in sight tanked working memory and fluid intelligence by up to 15 percent, and if you've got ADHD you get hit hardest. Multitasking is just as brutal: 160 FPS players who gamed while juggling another task took a 34 percent hit to immediate recall. So alt-tabbing mid-game isn't a break. It's a debuff.
Free milliseconds people leave on the table
Your breathing is wired into your reaction time, which sounds fake until you see the numbers. Reaction times run 20 to 50 milliseconds faster on the inhale than the exhale. At 240fps that's 5 to 12 frames, which can be the gap between landing the skillshot and eating one. So inhale before you commit to a trade or a fight, hold it through, exhale after.
And your playlist might be trolling you. Music with lyrics beat up visual and verbal memory by around 30 percent in a study of 120-plus people, while lo-fi did nothing, in the good way. Speech basically barges into the same part of your brain you're using for map reads and shotcalls, so it fights you for bandwidth. Swap to instrumental. Oh, and when you review VODs, watch at 2x: a study of 231 students found zero retention difference between 1x and 2x, so you're just saving hours.
The primer, the caveat, and the real goal
Quick caveat before the protocol, because I'm not going to make a study say something it didn't. A lot of this reaction-time research was run on FPS esports players, not LoL specifically. On LoL the same levers mostly cash out as cleaner last-hits, faster reactions to a gank, and dodging skillshots you'd normally walk into. Same brain doing the work. The genre on the lab sheet just happened to be aim-heavy.
Here's the routine that nets 10 to 30 milliseconds. Night before, 7 to 8 hours of sleep, which does more than any energy drink. (89 percent of people asked already knew sleep beats a 150mg caffeine hit, then went and pulled an all-nighter anyway. You know you do it.) Two hours out, 20 ounces of water with electrolytes. One hour out, the classic combo: 150mg caffeine, 200mg L-theanine. Thirty minutes out, a ten-minute walk. It also helps to schedule around your chronotype, since night owls peak around 12.6 hours after waking while morning larks peak right out of bed.
One last thing, because people chase the wrong number. The pros worth copying sit around 120 to 130 milliseconds and still hit their inputs clean. Fast is smooth, smooth is fast. Accuracy first, speed second. A blazing reaction that misclicks the flash is just a quick way to feed.
