Hydration & Nutrition

A water bottle is the cheapest LP you'll ever buy.

Evidence: Moderate Effort: Low

TL;DR

  • Drink at least 100 oz (2L) of water a day, before you feel thirsty.
  • Get electrolytes in first thing in the morning and again before you queue.
  • Hit at least 0.8 grams of protein per kilo of bodyweight, daily.
  • Eat a protein-and-fat meal pre-game, not a sugar bomb.
  • Build 90 percent of your diet from whole foods.

Mild dehydration is a hidden nerf

Here's a stat that should scare you: lose just 2 percent of your body weight in water and your cognitive performance drops by around 28 percent. Your brain is 75 percent water, so even a small dip chips away at memory, attention, and decision-making. And you won't feel thirsty when it starts. A 0.5 to 1.6 percent water loss already cranks up your anxiety, your fatigue, and how hard the game feels, while quietly dragging your mood down. You're cooked, and you blame the meta.

It's also sneaky-connected to your tilt. When you're underhydrated your cortisol spikes harder under stress, so that 2v1 going sideways hits you twice as hard. Get jittery off energy drinks? You're probably just dehydrated, because most stimulants make you pee more. Fix the water before you blame the caffeine.

How much, and when

The baseline is boring and it works: 100 to 120 ounces of water a day, plus electrolytes first thing in the morning. A clean rule of thumb is one ounce per pound you weigh. Get the electrolytes in before you boot up, not three games deep when you're already foggy. Stay topped up and you get the upside: sharper focus, faster nerve signals, less mental and physical fatigue. That's just reaction time wearing a different jersey.

Fuel that doesn't crash you

Protein is the lever most people skip. One study tracked 119 gamers across 18 training sessions: bump protein up by 0.8 grams per kilo and performance climbed, drop it by the same amount and scores tanked across every single session. So 0.8 grams per kilo a day is the floor, not the goal. Eat real food, win more LP.

For the pre-game meal, keep it protein and fat, skip the sugar bomb. A snack of Greek yogurt, 85 percent dark chocolate, berries, and pine nuts gives you energy and focus with no blood sugar crash mid-match. If you'd rather drink it, a smoothie of coconut water, milk, matcha, blueberries, walnuts, banana, kale, and chia seeds does the same job. And if 90 percent of your day is whole foods, steak, eggs, salmon, potatoes, berries, then your diet isn't the reason you're hardstuck.
